Triangle Villa on São Miguel Island, Azores

The proposed villa is located on the island of São Miguel, the largest island of the Azores Archipelago, Portugal. The site is characterized by an extraordinary natural landscape, where the built environment blends harmoniously with volcanic terrain, lush vegetation, and the calm waters of a nearby lagoon. The project has been conceived with the primary objective of preserving the natural beauty of the location while creating a contemporary residence that meets the highest standards of sustainability, comfort, and architectural quality.

The building consists of two levels and is distinguished by its unique triangular geometry, which allows the villa to integrate naturally into the surrounding landscape while maximizing panoramic views of the lagoon and the Atlantic horizon. The compact triangular form also contributes to structural efficiency and minimizes the building footprint, reducing its environmental impact.

The ground floor accommodates the living area, including a spacious open-plan living room, dining area, and modern kitchen. Large floor-to-ceiling glazed openings establish a continuous visual connection between the interior spaces and the surrounding landscape, allowing abundant natural daylight while providing direct access to outdoor terraces and recreational areas. The architectural design promotes a seamless relationship between indoor and outdoor living, encouraging occupants to experience the exceptional natural environment throughout the year.

The upper floor is dedicated to the sleeping area, where the bedrooms are positioned to ensure privacy, tranquility, and spectacular views over the lagoon. The layout has been carefully designed to optimize natural ventilation and solar orientation, contributing to thermal comfort while reducing energy demand.

A significant feature of the project is the large infinity swimming pool, positioned to visually merge with the lagoon beyond. Beneath the pool, an underground garage has been integrated into the terrain, minimizing its visual impact and preserving the continuity of the landscape. This solution also improves the functional organization of the property while maintaining the architectural purity of the above-ground volumes.

From a technological and environmental perspective, the villa has been designed as a Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB). The project incorporates highly insulated building envelopes, high-performance glazing, airtight construction techniques, and advanced passive solar strategies. Renewable energy systems, including photovoltaic panels and air-to-water heat pumps, significantly reduce operational energy consumption. Mechanical ventilation with heat recovery ensures excellent indoor air quality while minimizing heat losses. Rainwater harvesting systems, efficient water management, and sustainable landscaping further enhance the environmental performance of the development.

Natural materials such as local volcanic stone, timber, and exposed concrete have been selected to create a strong connection with the geological identity of São Miguel while ensuring durability and low maintenance. The architectural language remains minimalist and elegant, allowing the surrounding nature to become the true protagonist of the project.

The villa represents a balanced synthesis of innovative architecture, environmental responsibility, and landscape integration. By combining contemporary design with advanced energy-efficient technologies, the project offers a sustainable and comfortable living environment that fully respects the unique ecological and scenic value of one of Portugal’s most remarkable natural settings.
